Vlog Evaluations

Digipak

Here is the advert that i had created to go along with out album cover for "Peter and the Wolf".
i have used the same image and the same fonts from the album cover to keep the design together. i have then added stars to represent the album name "golden stars". i think this adds interest to the image and breaks up the negative space around the edge of the picture. i kept the advert quite simple because i didnt want to distract the audience away from the main subject of this piece.

Final digipak

there are the designs for the final digipak. the front and back cover and also the inside designs to the cd cover. i have used the same font on the front and the back to keep the flow of the design going. i have used a simple white background which is very clean and crisp and then added our design which is very simple aswell. we wanted quite a simple font to keep with the simplicity of the front cover. on the back cover i have then added stars to symbolise the name of the album "golden stars". this has also been repeated on the inside of the cover, i used quite a simple maroon colour yet it adds depth to our piece instead of being white and clinical. also on the inside cover i have used an image, half a wolf face and half of my face, which i was going to use as the orginal front cover but decided against it.
i then manipulated this image on the computer and it added depth and texture to our digipak
which is now being used on the inside of the cd cover.

Inspiration

these are some front covers that we had found for peter and the wolf and this is what has given us our inspiration for our own digipak. we are going to try and incorperate some of the design aspects used in these covers in our own cover.
the first image is the actual album cover to peter and the wolf. so this is what we are looking mainly and then we had found some more covers and really liked some of these designs aswell.

Digipak

these are some of the ideas that i have come up with for our media digipak. i designed these using corel paint shop pro. i have used some photographs that we have taken and then i have manipulated them on the computer to come up with these designs. we had to design our digipak to go with the music video that we have created. i tried a few designs out so that i could see which we liked best.

Audience feedback

Since we've not had much feedback on most of our other posts on this blog we decided to get some audience feedback by putting our video onto facebook.

The video has been on there for two days and so far all feedback has been positive, most clicking the 'like' button and leaving comments saying something along the lines of "i like it, well done guys!"
One comment pointed out that the video was a little choppy and we agree that it is, but think that this is due to the video having to be converted to a quicktime file, which has lessened the quality somewhat.
More comments are being left all the time so we will continue to take any criticisms or praise. (Preferably praise)

This is the video so far, again everywhere that has no video in it will be shots of he band.
If anyone could comment on anything that you find good or bad or that needs changing that would be very helpful

Thanks

Hey!
We've not written on here for quite a while because we've been too busy filming and editing. But now we have filmed and edited everything! . . . except the band scenes.
Obviously everywhere on the picture that doesn't have a piece of film in it will be band scenes.
But apart from that, the video is finished. While I (Tom) have been editing the final parts, Ashley and Charl have been starting on the digipack.
Basically its all going to plan and starting to come together nicely!

Tuesday, 9 February 2010

We have continued to film and edit our video, we have only to film the fight scenes and performance until we are finished. Yesterday we filmed the breaking up scene. We decided to have it by the river so that it would be a significant place for the story, this is why he decides to go there to commit suicide as it reminds him of his girlfriend.

Also, Tom got chased by a dog to whom we gave the name of Charles!

Friday, 5 February 2010

We've started filming the bridge and graveyard scenes and finally bought the song from play.com. We have captured all of our film so far and started to do a little editing.

Matt Stawski

Matt Stawski.
A filmaker from midwest america. He is inspired by the history of motown.
He began make short films and music videos with friends in grade school and high school.
He achieved a bachelor's degree in film and video and concentrated on the directing side.
His motion graphics has led him to being nominated MVPA award in 2007 in the computer effects category.

Matt has directed videos for many different bands including:
All Time Low
Fall Out Boy
Train
Charlotte Sometimes
Street Sweeper Social Club
The Maine
The Pink Spider
Anthony Green
Lisa Miskosky
Paramore
The Hush sound
The Bled

We chose to look at Matt because we like some of the bands that he has made music video's for. Charlotte had analysed a music video from the maine, so he fitted very well.

Matts style when creating video's is very dominated by narrative but with the performace on the locations of the narrative. he also uses alot of animation within the live footage, he uses cartoon writing which are usually lyrics within the song. he also uses alot of stop motion in his videos. There are alot of unusual camera shots and angles within his videos, giving an interesting spin on his videos.

Matts describes his style as:

"Matt is known for his surreal style that mixes graphics with live action, creating fantastical and hyper-real environments and effects for the artists and narratives in his video."

Here are a couple of video's which show his style.

It's my birthday today :) Woooooooooooo :D

(Y)
This is our shooting schedule, we don't expect to stick to it strictly as some things may take longer than we predict. For example yesterday we expected to do lots of shooting. We found this didn't happen and that we managed to shoot only the graveyard scene. This was because it took us a while to get there, we then had to look around the whole area for a suitable grave. Also Tom had to have his black eye put on with makeup. This took longer than expected and then we had to get back to college. We aim to get all this caught up on when Ashley is here again. Also we have to find a time when every band member is free, we are currently thinking perhaps a Wednesday afternoon would be most suitable.

We then made notes on each scene from the storyboard. We wrote down a detailed analysis of the narrative and how we would shoot it.

This is our storyboard.
This second storyboard is the exact shots we will take of the fight scene. We did this so we could see clearly eveything we had to include.

We do not necessarily aim to stick to this precisely. We have decided to change the order around slightly, adding in some elements of performance in other scenes than which we have drawn.

Friday, 22 January 2010

Yesterday we drew out our storyboard. Today we have decided to change the order of some of the scenes and wrote a detailed synopsis of exactly what is going to happen and when. We have also recruited some actors to be our band and also appear in the narrative part.

Risk Assessment

This is the risk assessment sheet that we have filled in to show any problems that may arise. whilst we are filming.

We have to fill in this sheet so that we are conscious of the risks involved. that we have thought about what problems could happen and the precautions we have to take. we need to make sure everyone of our team is safe. Safety is paramount! ;)

We have come to a conclusion that we are going to put both performance and narrative in our video. In all three of the videos we analysed both of these elements were used.

We are currently in the process of writing a questionnaire to find out what people would prefer to see in a music video and ones that they like themselves. This will give us an idea of how to structure our own video.

Cobra Starship

For my textual analysis I have chosen a song which includes a male vocalist, I think this links in very well with our chosen artist because the main singer from peter and the wolf is a male singer.

Cobra Starship – Good Girls Go Bad

The main genre of the band that I have chosen to do is Alternative Dance,
Alternative rock, Synthpop, Pop punk, you can tell this from the style of the video, the artists themselves and the characters in the music video, they are dressed stylishly and would appeal to the younger generation.

The lyrics in this video have been well represented in the music video. The band are singing about making “Good Girls Go Bad” suggesting that they are wanting to mislead girls into doing something bad which is not their normal ways hence “making good girls go bad”. This is enforced during the video showing girls doing “bad” things such as drinking, partying and gambling. The guys in the band getting arrested for misleading the “good girls”, the main girls in the video are actually the police.

The relationship between the music and the visuals is quite good because the band and the performers in the video are in a disco and the music that is accompanying the video is dance/electronic.

During this video there are a lot of close-ups of the main singer, Gabe Saporta, they are focusing up on the upper half of his body and his face. One of the items that you see in most of the videos are Gabe’s Ray Ban glasses.

There is quite a lot of reference to the notion of looking, looking at the girls in the music video, foucsing on the top half of their bodies, the girls are dressed in short skirts, high heels, low tops. Also there is a lot of use of mobile phones in this video.

This video is mostly narrative, there is no performance from the band. Its all about narrative.
